NYU School of Law Buzz Book
Welcome to the first edition of Vault's NYU School of Law Buzz Book. In this new and unique guide, we publish extended excerpts and sample admissions essays from surveys of students and alumni from NYU Law to bring you the inside scoop on its law program. The survey comments cover the following areas:
  • Admissions
  • Academics (curriculum, workload, etc.)
  • Employment prospects
  • Quality of life
  • Social life

The guide is intended to serve as a complement to other references to law schools currently available that utilize school-reported data. Unlike those guides, Vault's Buzz Books (which also include the Law School Buzz Book, Business School Buzz Book and College Buzz Book) are composed almost entirely of information provided directly to Vault from students and alumni.

We received comments from NYU Law, which we have included comments next to appropriate survey sections, offset with a different font and indented to be easily recognizable as school-provided comments. Corrections within the body of the comments are enclosed in brackets. NYU Law also provided separate narratives that have included them at the end of each chapter, under the heading "The School Says."

NYU's admission decision is made on a rolling basis, so it is to one's advantage to apply early--especially considering the fact that the school usually responds with a decision quickly. For those interested in applying for the prestigious scholarships open to incoming students, it is necessary to consider the earlier deadlines, as one will not be considered for these opportunities if the application fails to meet these deadlines. The school prides itself on its commitment to public interest, so internships and other pursuits, especially those relating to public interest, are a plus. But the competition for a spot in NYU is keen, so it is worth investing your time in every part of the application--GPA and LSAT, as well as the personal statement.

Academics: Students Speak

Academics at NYU are taken very seriously and the teachers are all high quality. For the most part, I found the professors to be very accessible. NYU Law actually provides funds for each professor to take every student to lunch one time per semester. This is a great way to get some additionally insight into the professors' interests. Further, NYU has teacher rankings and class statistics available, so it is possible to avoid taking "bad" professors.

The workload is what you make of it. There are no graded assignments during the semester, so it is up to the individual to be disciplined and keep up with the reading. Luckily, NYU has a B curve, which means that almost 80 percent of students will get a B. NYU does not require professors to give out C's, so unless someone blows of the final exam, there is pretty much no way of failing. NYU also pays for tutoring if a student is struggling in a particular class.

Employment Prospects: Students Speak

The school positions you well for any career in the law. Your performance at school will dictate your opportunities more than the school or the degree. The Office of Career Services is topnotch. The school is respected by all legal employers as one of the best in the country.

Career Services was excellent. They really helped me out in my search for employment. They provided individual guidance and also helped out the student body, in general, with information sessions and on-campus interview setups. The reputation of the school naturally helped students get the kinds of employment opportunities they sought.

Employment Prospects: The School Says

The School of Law regularly posts recent graduates to the U.S. Supreme Court for the highly-coveted clerkships. The Root-Tilden-Kern scholarship program has produced more than 800 of the finest public service leaders in the country.

I cannot imagine any law school with a higher quality of life than NYU. I loved my law school apartment. The housing is right in the heart of Greenwich Village and there are literally hundreds of restaurants within walking distance. I felt safe in the neighborhood at all hours of the day and night, even when walking alone.

NYU's campus is absolutely state-of-the-art, with the most modern technology. A new building was recently constructed to house all of the clinical programs and it is gorgeous. There is also catering every day for breakfast and lunch.

Incredibly social school. We are located in one of the most active nightspots in the city--right in the heart of the Village, so there is great, cheap food and drinks for lunch, dinner or late-night. Plus, we are right on every major subway line for easy access to every other part of the city. High proportion of residential living makes for close-knit friendships, lots of big parties and even a fair amount of dating. Clubs are also very active, including diversity and interest groups, as well as things like journals. There are incredible events with top scholars or public figures every week (at least two circuit or Supreme Court judges). Plus, every Thursday (and several other times throughout the year), the SBA throws a big party with free alcohol. I highly recommend this school.
