Contrasting perspectives on work/life balance

From a survey of recent parenting memoirs in The New Yorker:

“Employers are seldom asked to accommodate family life in any meaningful way; employees do all the accommodating, which mainly involves, especially for women, pretending we don’t actually have families.  Everyone has a story about how painful that is.  It’s also crazy, and maddening, and unfair.  We’ve all got story to tell, but stories aren’t going to rewrite employment law.”

From a profile of legendary Weil Gotshal partner Harvey Miller in The Detroit Free Press:

[Miller] once told the Wall Street Journal that he decided early in life to skip having children because it would only get in the way of his law practice.

"Children would have been an added pressure," Miller reportedly said. "You have to have time to give them love, and I didn't."
