"To Do" list for the frugal/cheapskate [Free Stuff Fridays]

Published: Aug 14, 2009

You can advocate for public transportation at the same time you're speeding past pedestrians by joining up with the cyclers at Brooklyn Critical Mass tonight (7pm), then use your own peds for a Park Slope neighborhood walk (10am) tomorrow. You can also throw caution to the wind skateboarding down certain city boulevards, since the Summer Streets program is closing down parts of some usually chaotic avenues for the day. (See the web site for further details.) You can rest on Sunday -- in Times Square, where the powers that be will be presenting the season three opener of AMC TV's Mad Men on the big screen "live" at 10pm. (Warning: Unlike the hard-drinking employees of Sterling Cooper who imbibe at work with no consequences, consuming copious amounts of scotch in public will only get you arrested.) The obsessed can come early at 8pm for the dress-as-your-favorite-character contest. (We're hoping for an army of Joan Holloways pouring strong coffee.)

Bonus: Outdoor conditions this weekend look to be ideal (i.e. non-moistureful) for anyone living in the Northeast, Ohio Valley, West or Southwest (we've been watching way too much Weather Channel). So heed your parents' (parents' parents?) oft-quoted advice: Turn off the dang television/computer/electronic gizmo and go play outside!
