Stump the Intern

Published: Oct 01, 2009

Q: I thought bullying would be over once I left high school but lo and behold, I am now a cog in Corporate America and it's like high school all over again. As a kid I would cower, but as an adult, I recognize that I need to do something; I don't deserve harassment and pushiness at work.

Signed,
Almost expecting a wedgie

A: First of all, you are absolutely right; you don't deserve harassment or pushiness. You do not deserve to be bullied. If you are truly being harassed—and it doesn’t matter why—you need to take the matter to HR. I doubt it is condoned or tolerated. With regard to bullying, you are not the first person to experience it in the workplace, so know that you’re not alone. Vault’s HR guy has a post on it in his blog; you can read it here. Good luck, and please let us know if you’re able to resolve the issue.
