A short list this week, so we thought we'd throw in a little change of pace on a somewhat related note. We've seen unemployment camp, unemployment olympics, and of course the occasional laid off bar night. The rise of the "unemploymentality" in general has been a particularly intriguing development of the Great Recession. The gut reaction of many seems to be to embrace the layoff and use it as an excuse to finally focus on whatever it is that makes them happy. It's "funemployment." Which means, of course, that we should have seen this one coming.

Unemployed people have always enjoyed day drinking, but with unemployment rates at all-time national highs, now they don't have to do it alone. It was only a matter of time before someone took to the internet to organize these mass jobless drinking extravaganzas in various cities around the world. So today, in addition to the actual job fairs listed above, here is this week's Unemployment Party Bar Schedule for New York City. Nothing says living laid off life to the fullest like slamming that first Jack Daniels at 1pm.

Monday, July 13, 2009 (1pm start)
Professor Thom's, 219 2nd Avenue (between 13th and 14th)

Tuesday, July 14, 2009 (1pm start)
Ginger Man, 11 East 36th St (between 5th and Madison)

Wednesday, July 15, 2009 (1pm start)
Spring Lounge, 48 Spring Street (at Mulberry)

Thursday, July 16, 2009 (1pm start)
Dorian's, 1616 2nd Avenue (at 84th St)

Friday, July 17, 2009 (1pm start)
McFadden's, 800 Second Ave (at 42nd St)

You have to feel for the group most affected by this trend toward the "funemployment" approach: recent college grads victimized by the terrible job market. This has to be so confusing for them. This time last year, passing around $2 pitchers of Keystone with a bunch of their unemployed friends was binge drinking. Tonight? Have another one, you're networking! Way to go! What a world, what a time, what a recession. What fun.

Welcome to the week, Pink Slipped. Here we go again.
