Job Search Resource of the Week (7/28/09): Women!

Published: Jul 28, 2009

After all, a woman is probably sitting somewhere within arms' length. (Please turn to her, introduce yourself, and ask her for her advice. We'll wait for your return.) Okay, that's not really what we meant. For our career-oriented purposes, we're talking about Women For Hire, a ten year-old company singly focused on recruitment services for women -- it claims it's the "first and only." (And no, perhaps it's not really the best name for a company with such a laudable mission.)

Anyway, there's a surprising amount of quality content here. Aside from the de rigueur job board and career advice section, the site offers news on career expos, articles (and a webinar!) on setting up a home-based business and/or website, and career coach contacts. Visitors can also take advantage of some "audio inspiration," in which some notable names discuss issues such as work/life balance, lessons learned from being fired, mentor relationships, sexual harassment, and coming out on top in a man's world. The five-to-fifteen-minute clips were contributed by the likes Robin Roberts (broadcasting), Bobbi Brown (cosmetics company founder), Carly Fiorina (former HP CEO), Nora Ephron (essayist/novelist/director) and Liz Rosenberg (publicist for Madonna, among other icons).

All things being equal, women still make a bit less than their male counterparts, despite major advances on this front over the years. So, thanks to Women For Hire for boosting the prospects of half of the working population, and showing women that having XX chromosomes doesn't always mean they have two strikes against them.
