Job Search Resource of the Week (6/30/09): UpMo!

Published: Jun 30, 2009

No, it's not a new, vaguely offensive expletive. It's catchy shorthand for Upwardly Mobile (Inc.), and who doesn't want that label? The company aims to serve as a sort of "career GPS," and has a uniquely thorough take on a search process that's usually painful at best.

Today, the company released a product called the Job Readiness Evaluator, a survey which asks a job hunter about his or her existing personal networks, habits, and preparation skills in a series of pointed questions. The result is a numerical score -- we love hard numbers here at Pink Slipped -- that tells the UpMo user (or UpMover) how ready he is to embark on a successful search. Mr. or Ms. UpMover gets a personalized plan of action based on the survey answers. Not only that, UpMo (figuratively) doles out to each respondent his or her own UpModel, or as UpMo puts it, a real-life top-tier business professional "with successful habits (and) an effective networking style … to help model their own success." (By the way, I was assigned Steve Case, co-founder and former CEO of AOL, in my practice run.)

For the next couple of months or so, the Job Readiness Evaluator is free, as is much of the rest of UpMo's domain. Check it out!
