Here's to the Fiscal Crisis

Published: Sep 14, 2009

Tomorrow marks the 1-year anniversary of the collapse of Lehman Brothers.  Although you could spend the day fuming about the lack of oversight on Wall Street, why bother? After all, “Living well is the best revenge.” Here’s five ways to celebrate the beginning of the economic collapse.

1.     Own a piece of history by bidding on Lehman items on eBay. Trying to keep people away from you at the gym? We suggest these Forest Green t-shirts. At 2 for $11.98 (current bid as press time), they’re not a bad deal.

2.     Form an anti-Wall Street book group and suggest The House of Morgan and The Bonfire of the Vanities as your first two reads. They’re cheap on Half.com—I promise we’re not in an endorsement deal with eBay—and free at the library.

3.     Get blotto at happy hour and kill two birds with one stone by going to a drinking establishment that has free food. BlackBook, New York Magazine, Gridskipper, and Wined & Dined all offer lists of places; we suggest calling ahead to confirm that these happy hours are still in effect.

4.     Savor every bite of a meal you so richly deserve. Jean Georges offers a $35 prix fixe menu from 5:30-6:30pm Sunday-Thursday and a $28 two-course lunch special every day. If $10 and under is more your style, Monday night (tonight!) means $6 Goulash at Café Steinhof in Park Slope.

5.     Get a better credit card, which we know isn’t exactly a “fun activity,” but hey, a better card can mean more rewards. New York Times “Your Money” columnist Ron Lieber’s got your back.
