Google dreams about you, too

Published: Oct 21, 2009

All you people with delusions of working for the Big G, take note: Google is hiring again. Chief executive Eric Schmidt announced as part of the company's third quarter conference call: "We've already indicated investment in head count; investment in head count is, roughly speaking, half engineering and half non-engineering, which has been historically our model."

The firm weathered the recession pretty well compared to similarly positioned companies in other industries. Even so, Google first started reducing its hiring efforts in October 2008, and in January 2009 cut more than 100 recruiters; two months later, another 200 were axed from sales and marketing divisions. Presumably, the company's latest results (for the quarter, a 7% increase in revenue and a 27% bump in net income) put it firmly on a recuperative path, or as Schmidt said, "We believe the worst of the recession is behind us and now feel confident about investing heavily in our future."
