ICT Job Opportunities

All the large IT and telecommunications companies offer job opportunities across a wide range of disciplines. In some, a degree in computer science will be necessary, whereas others (such as human resources) will accept more general qualifications. A typical list of departments would be:

• Operations and IT
• Business development
• Product management
• Administration
• Sales and marketing
• Consulting
• Finance
• Research and development

Each of these areas demands slightly different skills and experience. Some job specifications will have a long list of required attributes and previous roles, making them seem daunting and unattainable. However, once you have spent a couple of years in a junior IT or telecommunications position, you will probably have covered many different areas and acquired numerous skills, so these lists then seem easier to approach. There's also a learning curve when joining the sector, or even just a new firm; many have to learn a whole new vocabulary full of jargon and acronyms. For outsiders, this can be either comic or irritating.
