Goldman Threatens to Sack Bankers Who Leave Tokyo

Published: Mar 28, 2011

Goldman Sachs bankers in Tokyo recently asked their New York bosses if they could temporarily move to southern Japan where radiation levels posed less of a risk. The Tokyo bankers were told sure, they could move, but if they did they'd no longer have a job.

The harsh reply from Goldman management has received mixed reports from the firm's staff. And despite the ulitimatum, some employees have left the city.

Last week, several banking executives from Goldman and other firms, including J.P. Morgan and Morgan Stanley, visited their employees in Japan, in a show of a support and also, apparently, to make sure employees are still in their offices, making money for their firms, and not doing something rogue like running away to the south, trying to protect their familes from radiation contamination.
