The 2 Green Jobs Most In Demand With Employers

Over the past few months I have seen a lot of green jobs online by virtue of starting the Google for green jobs. I have visited all the major green job boards, been to countless green employer sites, read numerous green job reports and have seen firsthand what these cleantech companies are hiring for. Among all the job descriptions I have read, two types of jobs stand out.

Sales and Engineering Jobs

---In fact 14% of the jobs we have spidered so far are green sales jobs.
---Engineering related positions represent an astounding 25% of the database.

If you want to get into a green job today these are the two quickest paths to glory.

Renewable Energy

If you can sell renewable energy products and services, there are thousands of these roles across the country, particularly in solar sales. Solar installations are booming in many western states but there are solar companies in all 50 states. Many of these jobs usually require some knowledge of the technology. However, there are positions where that's not always the case. Here's one example I found for an Outside Sales Rep selling solar products:

"This position requires a thorough understanding of the sales process, very strong follow up skills and organizational skills are paramount. We are seeking an individual with a strong "can do" attitude that knows how to close deals. Technical knowledge and or knowledge of Solar/ Renewable Energy is a plus."

But it's in your best interest to understand the technology before you can sell it. Those of you that can prove your knowledge will have an advantage over those that don't. Consider getting training with companies like Boots on the Roof. Joining professional associations such as the Solar Energy industries Association (SEIA), American Solar Energy Society (ASES), the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), and the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) will also help your cause.

Green Engineering Jobs

When it comes to green engineering jobs there are a wide variety of opportunities. They range From Chemical Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Solar Engineers and even Environmental Engineers. All types of mechanical skills are needed. I hear over and over again that engineering roles are the hardest to fill. Understanding how mechanical devices are created and work together is a fundamental skill of the new green energy economy.
