The Ten Commandments of E-mail in the Corporate Workplace

  1. Include a clear and specific subject line.
  2. Edit text down to the minimum needed.
  3. Read your message three times before sending it.
  4. Consider how the recipient might react to your message.
  5. Check your spelling and grammar.
  6. Do not curse, flame, spam or use all caps
  7. Never forward a chain letter
  8. Do not use e-mail for any illegal or unethical purpose
  9. Do not rely on the privacy of e-mail.
  10. When in doubt, save your message overnight and reread it the next day.
IMPORTANT: Don't send an e-mail or a voice-mail when you are mad! Let yourself cool down before you react. You don't want a permanent record of your emotional response towards a colleague or a client. What you say in the heat of the moment can get you into a lot of trouble later.
